Modelar

Tal vez.

Blackmail

The truly dangerous moment is not when the powerful become greedy — it is when they stop hiding. That is when greed has become hubris. In an environment of power and greed, people are willing to take any action to win. It would not be strange, then, that certain individuals use blackmail to get what they want.

The Epstein case is widely believed to be connected to a network of control over prominent figures across different sectors. These figures are protected by politicians, lawmakers, and judges because they are all part of the same network — one where favours are exchanged and members protect each other. In this way, they place themselves above the law and above ordinary people. They can traffic human beings, start wars, and subdue individuals and institutions. They control education, cinema, communications, banks, and real estate — they have influence across every sector.

This makes them feel they can do anything. Governments can be hypocritical — sanctioning some whilst acting to favour themselves and their allies. And their hubris leads them to stop hiding, because they feel untouchable, invulnerable. That is the mark of the beast: hubris that arises once greed reaches a point where evil no longer needs to conceal itself.

Cristal

Contrast

Like yin and yang, we need at least two contrasting parts. Many things and situations may appear contradictory, but they can coexist — and the contrast between them is what gives each meaning.

Another way to express something similar is the saying about having a right hand and a left hand: a way of saying we need to be both hard and soft, strict and flexible, tight and loose. I also think of an accelerator and a brake. We should not always be speeding up — we could crash. But we should not always be pressing the brake either, because then we will not progress. I relate this to conservatives and progressives: right and left. We need both. We need that contrast. All changes cannot and should not happen too fast.

I think humankind is evolving and progressing, whilst at the same time taking steps back. But that is our design, our way of working — and it is part of nature. Our nature.

So the next time you think conservatives or progressives are idiots who should not exist, ask yourself: do we need them? They can be your children, your parents, any relative. And think about ourselves too — because we can be conservative about some things and progressive about others, just as we can be introverted and extroverted. Think of a scale from minus ten to ten — minus ten being pure progressivism, ten being pure conservatism. Nobody lives at the extremes. Most of us sit somewhere in the middle, and we move across that space depending on the question, the decade, the fear we carry that day.

Sudor

Cluster

I have heard a cluster of ideas that serve as a mental model. There are four, and if I remember correctly they are:

1. Reality over idea, or reality over theory. This is about staying close to the real — touching it, being present, putting things into practice. You can hear about something, but experiencing it directly is something else entirely.

2. Union over conflict. This is about joining things, people, humanity, cultures — including, sharing, becoming stronger together. At its core, this is about love.

3. The whole over the part. This is about understanding that we are part of a whole, and that the whole matters more than any single part. We see this principle repeatedly in cases where one person or a few sacrifice themselves for the many — and we admire that bravery and recognise it as an act of love.

4. Time over space. This is about processes that take time — about evolution, improvement, and cycles that do not become toxic but instead become cycles of growth. And it stands against the impulse to take and hold spaces, to conquer land. That impulse leads to patriotism taken too far, nationalism, racism, fascism, war, genocide.

These principles I heard from Pope Francis. He said they help him understand countries, cultures, and religions. He defends integration. And I think they align with the Golden Rule — they align with the purpose of loving, serving, and seeking truth.

Fama

Tell

Telling stories is how people shared knowledge, wisdom, and morals. Before writing, people only had stories to tell. And those stories could be different each time someone told them. Yes, people can memorise stories — but is it not better to transmit feelings and connect with your audience by adapting the story to them?

I always remember an exercise we did at school. Four classmates were chosen and taken out of the classroom. One of them read a short story aloud to those remaining inside, and then told it — not read it — to one of the classmates waiting outside, without the others hearing. That second classmate came in and told us the story: it was already slightly different. Then the second told it to the third, and so the process repeated. By the third retelling the story had changed noticeably, and by the time the fourth told it, it was completely different. This exercise helped us understand that stories can change — and distort — their original meaning with each retelling.

Psychologists call this the telephone effect — each retelling introduces small changes that compound into something unrecognisable. And that is one reason why stories like those in the Bible may contain inconsistencies or contradictions. Also because the way people communicated in ancient times was often more metaphorical or mystical. Should we take those stories literally? I would say no — and I would argue that we have been given the capacity to think and discern precisely so that we do not.

Rogar

Protest

We assume that words mean the same thing to everyone. In courtrooms, that assumption can put innocent people in prison.

People protest when there is injustice. And I wonder what we understand by injustice — because we must always remember that language is ambiguous, and that meaning depends on the experience of the person.

Words mean different things with different nuances. When we communicate, we must keep this in mind in order to understand better — whether we are the sender or the receiver of the message.

I remember a case where an elderly man killed an intruder in his home. He shot him. People protested on social media in the old man's favour. But the prosecutor was able to make the old man say that he had not been afraid — and that was decisive. The prosecutor needed to prove two things: first, that there was a meaningful disadvantage between the two — the old man had a rifle whilst the intruder may have had only a knife; second, that since the old man said he was not afraid, he was not in danger.

But what does it mean to be afraid? I strongly believe it is not the same for an old man raised to think that a real man does not feel fear — or at least does not admit it — as it is for a man of the twenty-first century who may have been taught that feeling fear is acceptable and worth naming. Both may have the same chemical reaction in the body, the same alert state activated. Both can be brave. But one identifies bravery with the absence of fear, whilst the other understands it as fear acknowledged — fear that activates the stress response and drives them to defend themselves or flee. To be fair, then, we must understand the limitations of how people express themselves — because in this case, the way a man described his own feelings put him behind bars. And that is unjust.

Leg

It is interesting how different legs are between men and women. There is a different structural design in the two, and we can see similar differences elsewhere in nature. In the case of humans, women tend to have more mass at the bottom and men at the top. In general, women's legs tend to be proportionally larger than men's.

Why might this be? There must be an evolutionary reason. We can form hypotheses, but as with many things, these must be accepted as provisional truths until new knowledge emerges. And that last point, I think, is always worth remembering.

I am reminded of a moment at university when a classmate was giving a presentation and said that neurons die and no new ones can form. The teacher interrupted and said that his source was probably an old textbook — because that was what people once believed, but it had since been discovered that new neurons can in fact form.

We study based on old information, and teachers either cannot keep up with current knowledge or they lack real experience — repeating only what they have read, not necessarily what they have lived. We must always be cautious about what is considered truth today, because tomorrow it may be expanded and transformed into a richer truth. This is what I call provisional truth.

Guarida

Consolidate

In society, many things consolidate as part of the culture. But some things change, and some are abandoned. What changes? We can think of the gladiatorial fights that served as entertainment for the people of Rome. Nowadays, combat sports are globally accepted — but not to the death. If those were the dominant entertainment consolidated throughout the Roman Empire, today football is perhaps the most widespread.

What has been abandoned? I am not sure — and perhaps that is precisely why nothing comes to mind right now. Slavery? Slavery was consolidated for centuries. And today there are people who believe it no longer exists. But it seems it does: I have heard about vessels in international waters — perhaps in the Indian Ocean — where ships keep people who were kidnapped and are treated as slaves. This is something that barely appears in the news and generates no sustained protest.

From another perspective, there are slaves in a different sense: slaves to drugs, to money, to greed, to a system that promotes individualism — and to a system where those at the bottom are misled into defending the very oppressors at the top of the hierarchy. Those who argue against taxing large companies or taxing inheritances, whilst they themselves have little or no capital that would ever be subject to such taxes. Because it only takes a few lieutenants to keep the rest of those at the bottom in line.

Precision

In communication, it is said that simplicity, precision, and confidence are key. But does that demand for precision lead us towards lies? People complain about politicians because they lie — yet politicians and executives communicate the way they do because they are taught to project certainty, never to transmit doubt. And that leads to dishonesty.

Why do they do that? Because they have learnt that people prefer certainty. People tend to choose someone who conveys that they know what they are talking about; if someone transmits doubt, people do not believe them. The more honest you are about uncertainty, the less people trust you — and the more you lie with confidence, the more they follow you. But is it not precisely when we reach a higher level of knowledge that we discover our own ignorance? The more we learn, the more aware we become that we know less than we thought. In other words, people who are ignorant of their own ignorance are the most confident about their beliefs.

This behaviour is part of knowing ourselves — both as individuals and as a group. Knowing this, instead of letting ourselves be drawn to whoever speaks with the most certainty, we can pause and think. Perhaps the one who seems not to have all the answers is actually the one who knows most. Perhaps we need to rethink how we communicate: being clear about what we know and honest about what we do not, whilst finding better ways to identify those who lie.

Ubre

¿Saben realizarlos?

Indication

When someone asks for answers, they expect a clear option — practically, they want you to choose for them. But what you can often offer instead is an indication: a direction to search, a prompt to think.

Many times people ask from ego or from laziness. From laziness, because they do not want to seek the truth — they just want easy answers, a simple affirmation that matches what they already believe. And that, at bottom, is also ego: they want to know what you choose either to judge you or to confirm that you belong to the same tribe.

Indications can take the form of questions — questions that serve as examples of what we should be asking ourselves to find the truth. Questions that reveal whether we are thinking with genuine criteria: Am I only absorbing the knowledge that reaches me by default? Am I seeking different perspectives, comparing, and searching for truth? Am I aware that media is not impartial? Am I aware if I am only consuming news from one side? Do I truly understand? Who really benefits from this? Is this aligned with my values? Is this coherent?

I think that most of the time the best way to offer an indication is to show a mental model for thinking — not an answer, not a conclusion. We must let the other person find their own.

Ajedrez

Slip

This is what political scientists call the protest vote cycle: corruption breeds disgust, disgust breeds extremism, and extremism, unchecked, breeds tyranny.

When people are disgusted by corruption, they can slip into supporting an extremist party that they do not initially believe will lead to totalitarianism — but it will. Decade after decade, people see that every party, both right and left, simply takes turns in power whilst the corruption continues. If a conservative party is in charge and a corruption scandal erupts, people vote for the progressive party. And when the progressive party is in charge and a scandal erupts, people vote for the conservatives. After enough of these cycles, extremists on both the left and the right begin to rise. They bring hope, but when they reach power they are no different — they slip into corruption just as the others did. And in the worst cases, they accumulate more and more power until they become totalitarian, and people do not see it coming. People want change, and so they slip into the arms of new political parties that tell them exactly what they want to hear.

Cicatrizar
